Where does World Food Day come from?

              This week we’re proud to be hosting an interactive workshop on World Food Day . World Food Day is celebrated globally on 16th October, commemorating the date on which the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations was founded in 1945. The JVS is one of many groups concerned about food security which will be marking this special day. Since 1945 World Food Day has been marked with a new theme annually in over 150 countries, with the aim of raising awareness of the causes of poverty and hunger. With investment in agriculture key to ending poverty and hunger, past World Food Day themes have centred on agriculture, which has seen a significant decline in foreign investment in the last two decades. This year’s theme is: ‘ 2013: Sustainable Food Systems for Food Security and Nutrition’. JVS will be running a workshop focussing on sustainable food, using UK-grown produce and discussing what it means to eat sustainably and respectfully. Meanwhile, Israel will be marking World Food Day with a unique countrywide picking event, organised by Leket Israel – The National Food Bank. Volunteers will spend Friday picking fruits and vegetables to give to the needy. Find out more about our event by clicking here .
