Vegan food company celebrates saving over 21,000 fish since Veganuary

An international vegan food brand has estimated that it has saved the equivalent of over 21,000 fish from our oceans in just six months, based on the equivalent weight of its new plant-based fish alternatives sold. The Fry Family Food Co. calculated that the total weight of its new fish-style fillets sold in Tesco , would equate to a staggering 21,534 haddock saved, based on the average weight and yield of that fish. According to the plant-based company’s calculations, this would mean sales of the new fish-style product could also have saved the equivalent of either 4,550 salmon, 1,534 cod or 130 tuna fish. Further to this, for every one pound of fish caught, up to five pounds of unintended marine species are caught and discarded as by-kill, according to Cowspiracy.com . This means sales of Fry’s plant-based fish alternative could have also prevented the unnecessary capture, harm and often death of the equivalent of 874 porpoises, 309 bottlenose dolphins, 289 green turtles, or two gigantic humpback whales. The Fry Family Food Co. announced the launch of its fish-style fillets at its Veganuary event earlier this year, making it the newest addition to its growing plant-based range. It has seen steady demand and interest in the product over the past six months, as well as its extensive range of 100% meat-free, high protein products. 2020 has seen a phenomenal rise in people opting for plant-based options, from meat eaters to meat-reducers, vegetarians and vegans alike, with more people signing up for Veganuary this year than ever before (400,000 in 2020 compared to 250,000 in 2019).
