New York City is known for its vibrant Jewish community and its plant-based culture, but where is the intersection between these two cuisines? Dotted throughout the city, there are a several fully kosher certified, plant based restaurants to choose between, and they do not disappoint.
This year, during a trip to NYC, my sister (both jewish vegans) went for dinner at Urban Vegan Kitchen in the city’s centre, and it was absolutely increadible. For all those looking for comfort food that happens to be completely plant-based and kosher certified, look no further.
I went with the classic ‘Tofuego on the Block’ which is a ‘buttermilk’ fried tofu patty served in a soft potato bread bun filled crunchy vegetable fillings and plant based ranch dressing. The entire thing was crunchy, savoury and delicious. My sister ordered the cashew based mac 'n' cheese, topped with shiitake 'bacon' and crispy breadcrumbs, which was warm, rich and comforting. To share, we had to try their no.1 best selling dish which were the seitan buffalo ‘wings’ dipped in creamy plant-based dressing. Every dish was deliciously crafted to perfection. As this restaurant was completely kosher, we were able to box up the leftovers and bring them to our family home which only permits kosher-certified foods. This way everyone could enjoy the dishes & Urban Vegan Kitchen was put on the agenda for a wider family outing.
Besides being kosher and plant based, this restaurant accommodates even more widely for all its guests. Beyond their main menu, they have separate menus dedicated specifically to soy-free and gluten-free options, something pretty unheard of in most non vegan restaurants. So whether you keep kosher, follow a strict vegan diet, or just appreciate tasty food, Urban Vegan Kitchen needs to be on your NYC bucket list.
