Garlic Choose autumn-friendly planting bulbs from a garden center for the best results. Separate the bulbs just before planting and keep the paper outer skin on each clove. Ensure the soil is loose, gets good sunlight and has good drainage. Plant each clove about 6 cm deep into the soil & that their pointy tip faces the sky.
Onions: Use autumn sets (miniature onions) like Senshyu Yellow, Radar or Autumn Champion to get a head start on next year's crop. Choose autumn friendly onions varieties such as Senshyu Yellow to ensure the bulbs thrive ready for next year. This will help them tolerate the winter and avoid them seeding prematurely. Plant between October and November in a place that gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. Ensure that the soil is weed free and very easy well draining to avoid the onions rotting. Plant the onions one inch deep with their pointed end faced up. Space them around 5 inches apart.
Kale:
This hardy green thrives in low light and handles frosty weather easily. Kale is a hardy green which can grow in autumn & works in many seasonal dishes. Make the most of the sun, though partial shade is okay & away from strong winds. Ensure the soil is well drained and mixed with compost ideally. Use young plants rather than seeds or early seedlings and place them 12-18 inches appart in rows around 20inches from each other to ensure good airflow. Ensure the young plants are planted deeply & watered thoroughly.
Spinach Fast growing leafy vegetables such as Spinach can thrive when planted in autumn. You can even benefit from a continuous harvest if you pick the outer leaves consistently through the season. Planting between August and through October when the temperatures during the day have cooled helps them grow comfortably. Ideally go for winter varieties like Bloomsdale long standing or Giant Winter.
Carrots Early autumn is the perfect time to start growing your carrots for next year. See your seeds equally spread apart in loose soil which is free of stones. The he coolers weather should help the root development and a light frost can even make your carrots taste much sweeter.
