The upcoming festivals Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, Sukkut and Simchat Torah are approaching & the days are getting shorter and colder. What are some ways we can keep our homes warm while using less electricity in line with the mitzvah of tikkun olam?
Firstly, one way to preserve energy is to only use it when and where it is needed. If you live alone, only utilise the radiators in your own room to keep you warm. Most importantly the heating must be off when you are not at home. The same can be said for turning off the lights when they are not in use.
Secondly, another way to preserve energy is to only use it at a minimised amount. Turning down your thermostat by 1-degree makes a huge impact; just this save about 7% of the energy you use for heating. More of this energy could be saved by just insulating yourself with extra layers, warming your body instead of your home.
Lastly, one huge way energy is wasted is when you are cooking in the kitchen, which can be easily resolved by batch cooking. Not only will you save time by cooking meals at once and storing them in the fridge for the week, but doing all of this in one go means you will need to use the stove and oven less. Batch cooking uses a lot less energy than cooking individual meals every night of the week, potentially saving around £100 a year for the average household.
