Hens have a life expectancy of 5 years or more. However, whether battery or free-range or organic, egg-laying hens have their lives cut short in order to maximise profit. They are generally gassed or killed by other means at between 68 and 72 weeks. Male chicks are killed very soon after they hatch, either gassed / suffocated / crushed in a grinder, with the exception of Germany, which has recently become the first country to ban this . Many of our members have asked us if there is a kinder, cruelty-free alternative to high street eggs. We did some research and discovered Hen Nation , whose model of production enables each hen to live out its full natural life. Hen Nation was created by vegetarian Isobel Lane. As a result of being rescued, the hens are able to live happy, traditional, truly free-range lives – free to graze grass and forage in traditional hay meadows in their North Yorkshire home.
