Shoppers will have the opportunity to get their hands on ‘artificial eggs’ after a supermarket chain launched the product made from plants in its stores.
High end food retailer Whole Foods has made the substitute available in its shops in California.
Beyond Eggs, which is backed by billionaires Peter Thiel and Bill Gates, is said to be able to replace the real product in cakes and other foods that utilise eggs.
‘We want to take animals out of the equation,’ said the company’s founder Josh Tetrick.
‘The food industry is begging for innovation, especially where animals are involved – it is a broken industry.’
Mr Tetrick hopes Beyond Eggs will in time be used in mass market products and give those in poorer countries another source of nutrition without the need for livestock.
The company is in talks to release the product in the UK and other countries around the world.
