Last Friday night, guests gathered for a delightful three-course dinner prepared by JVS chefs and volunteers. The meal was themed around Tu Bishvat, the Jewish New Year of the Trees, incorporating a variety of fruits, nuts, and seasonal vegetables to honour nature’s bounty.

The evening was not just a culinary experience but also a chance to reflect on environmental responsibility. Special guest speaker, Rabbi Jeff Newman, addressed attendees with an inspiring talk on climate action and Jewish environmental ethics. As Rabbi Emeritus of Finchley Reform Synagogue, he has long been an advocate for sustainability and social justice. Many were captivated by his personal story, including his well-known participation in the 2019 Extinction Rebellion protests, where he was arrested at the age of 77 for his commitment to environmental activism.

Throughout the meal, we enjoyed dishes that celebrated the richness of seasonal produce, thoughtfully prepared to align with the values of Tu Bishvat. The evening fostered a warm, communal atmosphere, with meaningful discussions about sustainability, Jewish traditions, and the urgent need for climate action.

By the end of the night, guests left not only well-fed but also deeply inspired by Rabbi Newman’s message and each other. The event served as a powerful reminder of the connection between Jewish teachings and environmental responsibility, encouraging everyone present to take steps towards a more sustainable future.
