There are moments throughout the Tanakh where we hear of humans who are saved by the mercy and kindness of animals.
This includes the lions who did not hurt Daniel when he fell into their den (Ktuvim, Chapter 6) and the ravens who gave bread to the prophet Elijah, saving his life (Nevi’im 1, Chapter 7).
Indeed, animals’ capacity for love is well supported by science. Accordingly, we must treat them in consideration of their ability for subjective experiences, and promote their wellbeing. Perhaps, in some ways we ought to act less like humans, and more like other animals, practicing compassion for one another.
