A new report by The Vegan Society has found that 3% of the population is now vegan, with 10% reducing their intake of animal products. Young people and women are most likely to make this change, with the highest rates of vegans residing in the South West and the lowest rates in the East Midlands.
Although 3% doesn’t sound like much, it represents about 2 million people. According to the Vegan Calculator, in just one year, collectively 2 million vegan individuals save:
Animal lives: 730,000,000
Kilograms of CO2: 6,644,000,000
Square metres of forest: 4,044,000,000
Kilograms of grain: 13,214,000,000
Litres of water: 3,039,646,000,000
In context, 730 million lives saved in one year is the equivalent of just under the entire human population of Europe. When we think that being vegan ‘won’t change anything’, we must remind ourselves that each of us has the opportunity to save the lives of many innocent beings.
So why choose otherwise?
Do a mitzvah, choose compassion.
